Term: October 2012 - October 2013
Rebekah Dike aged 15 attends Little Ilford School and is the current Young Mayor of Newham. She is a very keen drama student and enjoys playing football and basketball in her spare time. As the sixth democratically elected Young Mayor of Newham, Rebekah has been motivating young people through a number of inspiring projects.
Young Mayor Rebekah Dike said, "I cannot change Newham entirely therefore I will not make promises I cannot keep. However, I can open up the potential in each young person to become confident and I can provide the gift of inspiration.”
Since being elected Rebekah has been involved in projects to carry out her manifesto priorities.
Inspire a generation – One of Rebekah’s priorities is to inspire young people in Newham. She has done this by achieving funding for young people to receive specialist training provided by a Dale Carnegie ‘Skills for Success’ programme, working in partnership with the Jack Petchey Foundation.
Banish exam stress – Exam stress and anxiety is very common, particularly in year 11. Rebekah has addressed this by introducing confidence building workshops through debating and spoken word. Rebekah and the Youth Council launched a ‘Big Debate’ project that aimed to get more young people involved in local issues and politics. As a result young people were given the opportunity to visit Cambridge University's debating society and the House of Commons
Get active – Rebekah is keen on providing more activities for young people after school and during holidays. She would like to implement activities that will equip young people with a voice, greater confidence and excellent communication skills. She is currently involved in organising the ‘Young Mayor’s Inspire Tours’ which involves a tour of landmarks in Newham.
