Jamel Higgins

Young Mayor: Lewisham

BIOGRAPHY

Jamel is 17 yrs old and attends SFH6 in Forest Hill and Sydenham. Jamel was elected in October 2012 and works with his colleagues the young advisors to represent young  people and be part of the decision making processes in the borough.

Jamel is a keen sportsman and is interested in entrepreneurship and setting up his own business, he has been consulting at schools and youth groups about his budget proposals and finding out what other young people in Lewisham are interested in.

 

WHAT I PLAN TO DO WHILE IN OFFICE

Through his budget Jamel is developing work experience and mentoring opportunities for young people. Working with partners in the borough and further afield Jamel will develop a mentoring and work experience programme for young people in the borough, giving young people inspirational one to one  support and experience in workplaces that they can aspire to.

Jamel is also working on a media  and performing arts project  continuing to develop opportunities for young people  to develop and showcase skills and talents in the performing arts. Working with schools and other organisations to promote young people’s talents.

Jamel continues the work of previous young mayor’s in supporting intergenerational work and working with voluntary and other organisations around issues of safety and community activities. As well as continuing the European exchange work with a range of international partners.
